Growing up in the 19th century

An interesting survey across Dutch 19th century art that looks at the changing way in which children and youngsters were portrayed. Although children were normally only depicted as sitters for formal portraits, by the end of the century they had often assumed an independent role in the work of realist painters like Maris, Mauve and Breitner.
