Henri de Braekeleer: window into modernity

Musée Félicien Rops, Namur, to 2 February 2020

A fine exhibition which looks at the Belgian painter Henri de Braekeleer (1840-1888), who is best known for his pensive depictions of figures inside a room, normally near an open window showing the world beyond. A very 19th-century preoccupation with the enigma of silent longing finds expression in a number of captivating works.
