An overview of the oeuvre of German painter Johann Erdmann Hummel (1769-1852), whose work bears testimony to his intense interest in optical illusions. Although some of his work can in part seem stilted and conventional, the trickery concerning linear proportions and reflections that permeates his work makes him an enduringly fascinating artist.
